Jill’s Back.

This month, March 2019, more than 7,000 athletes from almost 200 nations worldwide arrived in Abu Dhabi, along with 3,000 coaches and over 20,000 volunteers, to compete in the 2019 Special Olympics World Summer Games. RNN'er Jill was one of those 20,000. She played her part in the games by joining #TeamIreland for an unforgettable trip. This week’s WWW is dedicated to Jill and her experience.

WHO?

All kinds of extraordinary events took place across the ten days, and not all of them were on the courts or pitches or even involved the athletes (is that bad…)

My ’WHO’ must go to my comrades, the 74 #TeamIreland volunteers, and in particular my media team volunteer buddies! Travelling as the ‘wolf-pack’ we were responsible for sharing the contagious content out to whoever would listen 😊 – the stuff you see on the TV, in the papers, on Insta, Twitter and FB came mostly from this amazing team!

As part of the media, we were privileged to have ‘access all areas’, and it really was a privilege. We got to know the athlete’s personalities, witness the pride of families and watch the amazing coaches encourage their teams throughout this whirlwind ten days.

WHAT?

WHERE?

The spirit of Special Olympics was alive at the star-studded Opening Ceremony in the iconic Zayed Sports City Stadium in the heart of Abu Dhabi, the largest sports venue in the Persian Gulf!

The Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi officially welcomed more than 7,500 athletes and 3,000 coaches, representing 200 nations 😮, to a crowd of thousands who had packed into the stadium to watch the incredible live show that weaved together amazing live performances, music, dancing, inspiring speeches, colourful displays and fireworks.

The phrase "experience of a lifetime" sounds trite, but that is exactly what it was!
